A Brave New World: Apps and the Creation Thereof

I have always enjoyed being able to pass off my pleasures as work. One of the best parts about studying film and TV was how much of it I got to watch, and let me tell you I put in plenty of over time. I remember the frequent exchanges with my mother,

Mum: Stop watching so much TV.
                Me: I’m studying.
Mum: You’re writing an essay on Kill Bill not Xena.
                Me: Background research.

It was quite the surprise when it was mother who offered up this new form of fun masked as work. Last week when I was visiting my parents in Brisbane my mother said to me, “Where thinking of writing a game app, and was wondering if you’d like to help?”
I practically jumped up and down and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since. Naturally a huge part of my research has involved downloading and playing more games in the last week than I have the entire time I’ve owned a phone. My poor (not so) little HTC is exhausted.

I’ve taken on the job of managing my family unit of developers (my mother, father, and brother are all programmers, while I still think Java is a type of coffee bean) and the design side of things. So far we’re all contributing rather nicely to the ideas and I’m hoping within a year we’ll have a sweet little app to share with the world.

Life Instyle Wrap Up

Life Instyle was the biggest and longest market I've ever been a part of. Filling both levels of the Carlton Exhibition Building, the physical size of this show was astounding. Walking around it for the four days of the event was exhausting but a real treat. The stalls were beautifully designed and the products inside them were even more delightful.

The Exhibition Building is beautiful, a really great space to spend four days. It also hosts the Finders Keepers Market and the Big Design Market.

On the first night of the show we were treated to celebratory champagne. My neighbouring stallholders and I let down our hair and got to know each other.

My Stall

Coffee and a danish kick off day three.

Notebook from O-Check Design Graphics, Candle Holder from The Design Farm, Clutch/Ipad Case from Spider and Lily, Ceramic bowls from Form & Fable.
One of the best parts of Life Instyle is at the end of the last day when you can run around like a mad person and pick up a few things for yourself.

Consolidation

I've decided to begin discussing my Etsy store, Hearsay on this blog. I think it's still relevant because my jewellery and accessories are, in there own way, visions of whimsy.

For those of you who are avid readers of this blog and don't just skim through the pretty pictures (no judging, I do it too) you may remember roughly a year ago I had this big back and forth about whether to include my Hearsay stuff on this blog or whether to create a new one. Well this is the last back (or forth depending on how you look at it) and I'm sticking to it... hopefully.

So, yes, this does mean a few changes, good changes, marvelous changes!

By Howard Pyle, 1911.
The most obvious change will be posts about the development of my label.

I've currently got a new accessories collection in the works. Originially I was thinking nymphs and oceanids would be the inspiration for the range but it soon switched to mermaids and pirates much like those in the Howard Pyle painting above. I love Howard Pyle's pirate and mermaid paintings, especially his use of colour. I have his The Mermaid over in this post.

The Mermaids Mirror Necklace
One of the necklaces under construction was inspired by the notion that Mermaids are frequently seen preening and looking at themselves in mirrors. Norman Lindsay's mermaid etching found in one of my mermaid posts played a big part in the conceptualization of this necklace.

I've been keeping a pinterest board of all the images that fit the theme and vibe of this collection and have started to recognise a recurring colour palette of deep green blues and dusty faded reds.
